Four men were taken into custody on drug charges on May 1. Officers from the police department in Martin assisted Weakley County sheriff’s deputies in the operation.
At 8 p.m., law enforcement went to a motel in Martin where they found an active meth lab. Four men ranging in age from 18 to 27 were taken into custody and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and manufacture of methamphetamine. Two of the men also face charges of simple possession of schedule 2 methamphetamine.
Law enforcement recovered digital scales, pipes for consuming meth, plastic tubing, camp fuel, lye, marbles, salt, sulfuric acid, coffee filters, a homemade gas generator top and an active one pot bottle. They also seized a Jeep Cherokee. A state meth lab response crew responded to the scene. The motel room was placed in quarintine and must be cleaned by a state-approved team.
Drug charges related to manufacture and distribution can be serious, but even when a person is only charged with possession, there can be severe consequences. Drug charges may affect a person’s ability to seek a career in certain fields as well as access to some types of housing and financial student aid. If the person has prior drug-related convictions, the situation may be even more serious. However, there might be a number of things an attorney could do to get drug charges reduced or dropped or to assist a person in developing a strategy for going to court and pleading not guilty. For example, charges could be dismissed if law enforcement performed an illegal search and seizure. A person might also be able to work out a deal to get charges reduced in exchange for completing a treatment program.
