A 47-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman were taken into custody at a Tennessee airport on Dec. 28 after authorities got information about a planned drug delivery. The man had flown a small aircraft that was on the tarmac at the Crossville airport.
There were more than 60 pounds of marijuana aboard the plane. In the airport lobby, the woman had 90 pounds of edible marijuana products and marijuana.
The operation involved a number of different agencies at the federal, state and local level including Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Middle Tennessee High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department and the Crossville Police Department. The two people were charged with one count each of manufacturing, delivery or sale of a Schedule VI substance. Their bond at the Cumberland County Jail was set at $500,000.
A conviction of drug charges can have serious consequences whether they are as serious as this and involve sale and delivery or if they are for smaller amounts and involve possession only. In some cases, these types of charges may have consequences for a person’s career or the ability to receive some student loans. A person facing these charges may want to discuss strategy with an attorney. For example, the goal may be to get the charges reduced, to get a lighter penalty or to have the charges dismissed entirely. In the first two cases, it might be possible to plea bargain and get a reduced sentence. However, an attorney might also want to look into whether authorities violated the defendant’s rights. If there was an illegal search and seizure or any other type of violation, the charges could be dismissed entirely.
