According to news reports, Nashville District Attorney General Glenn Funk has said his office will no longer prosecute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.levittandlevittlaw.com\/criminal-defense\/drug-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">marijuana possession charges<\/a> against those people who have less than half of an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>His office issued a statement: \u201cMarijuana charges do little to promote public health, and even less to promote public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>DA&#8217;s top priority<\/h2>\n<p>Funk said his office\u2019s top priority is to prosecute violent crime and to support victims.<\/p>\n<p>Nashville Mayor John Cooper supports the change, saying \u201cwe are doing everything we can to keep nonviolent young people out of the criminal justice system.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Bold, progressive<\/h2>\n<p>A criminal defense attorney in Tennessee\u2019s capital said of the DA\u2019s announcement, \u201cyou don\u2019t see prosecutors, at least in Tennessee, making progressive, bold statements like this,\u201d adding that Funk \u201cis a leader in this regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Funk said those arrested for marijuana possession \u201care not endangering our community, but are saddled with the collateral consequences of a narcotics arrest record.\u201d He also stated that \u201cwhen you combine that with the racial disparities, it becomes clear it needs to end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As you might know, a recent study by the ACLU determined that African Americans are nearly four times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession as whites, though both ethnicities use the substance at roughly the same rate.<\/p>\n<h2>Racial disparity<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2020\/07\/01\/nashville-da-no-more-minor-marijuana-possession-prosecutions\/5356627002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tennesseean reports<\/a> that in Nashville, annual marijuana possession busts have skewed against the city\u2019s racial make-up.
